The coronavirus has swept through the globe, changing life as we know it. There have been significant interruptions to travel and the economy, and sadly, a massive loss of life. Up until recently, it was believed that the first case occurred in mid-December 2019, however, studies are now showing that cases were appearing as early as November 2019. As a consequence of this and other miscalculations, the virus was allowed to spread from China to every continent on the planet via human travel.
What is a coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that typically affect animals but have made the jump to humans. They usually cause mild symptoms, but on occasion, as with SARS and MERS in the past, they may occasionally lead to more severe symptoms. This particular strain of the virus is called Covid-19.
The Best Way to Deal with Covid-19
There is no completely approved cure for Covid-19, nor is there a vaccine available for it yet. To stay safe, you should focus on taking as many preventive measures as possible. Here are the top four you should be aware of:
1. Stay Home/Practice Social Distancing
Because of how contagious Covid-19 is, in addition to the fact that carriers of this virus may be asymptomatic while being infectious, Covid-19 infections rapidly increase when people go out in large numbers. It can be tempting to take your chances but remember that while you may not fall sick or die if you pick up the infection, you may transmit it to others who may not be as fortunate.
2. Wash Your Hands
The virus is wrapped in a membrane of lipids which easily get dissolved when exposed to soap. The virus itself is extremely fragile and will die once this happens. It is therefore very important you wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds once you have been out or have had any contact with people and objects from outside your home.
3. Avoid Touching Your Face
The main way people get the coronavirus is by making contact with infected persons and then touching the mucous membranes on their faces. These include the eyes, nostrils and lips. If you can’t get to any soap and water to wash your hands, or at least some hand sanitizer, then at least refrain from touching these sensitive areas of your face.
4. Take Care of Your Immune System
Data shows strongly that having a strong immune system is an important determiner of one’s chances of survival against Covid-19. Simple things to do include eating a healthy, vitamin-C rich diet, getting enough sleep, and exercise. Also, try to avoid excessively stressful situations.
