Struggling with exercise motivation in lockdown?
Here’s why we should all keep moving
With the second wave of the pandemic upon us and the ever-changing rules and restrictions of lockdown it’s not surprising that many of us have lost motivation when it comes to working out.
Many of us had to change the way we exercise; goals were paused and training took on a new focus. So whether you’re back at the gym, working out at home, or have taken up running and cycling, moving your body in the midst of a pandemic has huge benefits. Not only will it help you physically, but also it will support you mentally. Exercise can enhance your mood, wellbeing and energy levels by helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.
If that isn’t enough motivation to get moving and you’re still in need of an extra boost to get out of your seat, try these top tips…
1. Make a Plan
Give structure to your day with achievable to do list of both personal and fitness orientated tasks. We all need a little routine and discipline in lockdown.
2. Set a Goal
Goals give you something to check progress against. For example, setting a goal that by the end of the month I will be able to run non-stop for one mile. By creating achievable small wins, and writing it down, you then become accountable to yourself.
3. Don’t be hard on yourself
If you can’t get motivated to workout, take a walk or a run. Exercising outside is great for both your physical and mental health, just be sure to follow the current government guidelines.
4. Train with others (virtually)
Grab your friends, decide on a time and check-in with each other every day at that same time. Joining in with other people will give you all a boost and help to keep you all motivated.
5. Keep it interesting
Vary your programme to keep it interesting and if you’re getting bored, change it up.
6. Eating healthily
Working from home we are much less active than normal and the temptation to snack is never far away, but try and stick to a similar eating pattern each day just like you would in your regular working week.
7. Use an App
There are loads of great fitness apps that will act as a virtual personal trainer or training partner. They will analyse your performance to show your progression with regular reminders to keep you motivated and moving towards your goals.
8. Take a break
A resilient body needs a resilient mind. Take time every day give yourself some ‘me time’. We hold a lot of stress and anxiety within our bodies, take a deep breath… and relax. Try yoga or meditation, or just putting your feet up.
9. Get a good night sleep
Listen to your body. If you’re really tired, give yourself time to sleep. Without good sleep, our mental health suffers and our concentration goes downhill. Sometimes the world can wait.
